Science and research

In addition to the renowned University of Bonn, the region now has seven universities of applied sciences, with more than 40,000 students.

In addition to the universities research is also carried out in numerous institutions. The German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics, several Max Plank institutes, the Fraunhofer Campus and the Research Establishment for Applied Science ("FGAN") are some of the most renowned addresses for research in the region.

The network of research and science institutions has been enhanced by the recent addition of institutes such as the "Caesar" foundation - whose focus is on interdisciplinary co-operation - or the brain research centre "Life&Brain".

The region is also home to some of Germany's main scientific and academic institutions. More than 20 national and international academic institutions - and also the national organizations for student finance and for the allocation of university admissions - have settled in and around the science center Bonn. These include, for example, the German Research Association (DFG), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the  Alexander Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the Conference of University Rectors (HRK), the Leibniz Association, the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres (HGF) and the Federal-State Commission for Educational Planning and Research Promotion.

Joint activities, co-operation and presentations at major international fairs are coordinated by an existing scientific network.
